What Experts Are Saying About Texting

Let's Separate Fact From Fiction!

Texting and cell phone usage have been a topic of fierce debate over the recent years. With more and more people, old and young beginning to use them, mobile phone use is reaching an all-time record high. We know what some people think about cell phones. Some absolutely love them and couldn't live without them.

On the other hand, some condemn their usage and blame them for ruining modern relationships and even causing cancer. In an attempt to separate the fact from the fiction, let's dive into a few popular topics on texting and see what the experts are saying about them. The results may surprise you.

Hurting Your Eye's

We have all heard this from one person or another. Staring at video screens for extended periods of time can become unhealthy for your eyes in the long run. Now, we're all familiar with the discomfort that may arise from using our phone all day. Our eyes burn a bit but usually nothing too bad. But what about long term damage?

Lab tests have suggested that long-term exposure to HEV light from screens can damage tissue in the retina. Yet, in an interview with Digital Trend magazine, Doctor of Optometry Gary Heiting states that "No one knows for sure at this point if the continuous use of digital devices may cause perpetual damage to the eyes". While the evidence may not be conclusive enough to make a definite statement, there is still some questions being raised about HEV exposure. Something possibly to stay tuned for.

Ruining Relationship's

Another critique we hear far too often involves smartphone usage damaging our relations. This is an understandable concern if we ignore all real contact only to phone sex or sex texting! But, phones allow us to get into contact with people who aren't near us. And this can lead to a temptation to try and connect with other members of the opposite sex. Many a relationship has ended over a partner finding intimate texts.

Curious to hear what the expert's say about this one?

A study conducted by Brigham Young University suggests that higher levels of cell phone usage directly correlates to more conflict and less satisfaction in relationships. The main point to keep in mind is that if your partner feels you are spending more time on the phone rather than with them, there is most likely a problem. These devices primary design is to facilitate our lives when used in moderation. Make sure they don't become a distraction that causes you to ignore the most important things in your life.

Causing Cancer

Here's the big one; Can our wireless phones cause cancer? It seems as though everything these days can have a link to some sort of cancer. Reportedly, they transmit high levels of radio-frequencies (radio waves), a type of non-ionizing radiation, from their inner antennas. With almost all of us using our cell phones for a good part of the day, this is very disturbing for many people.

According to Cancer.org, there have been many studies looking into the effect cell phone radiation has on brain tumors. They mention quite frankly that many studies fail to prove any correlation. Furthermore, the ones that do suggest a possible link are still difficult to draw conclusions from. This is something that there is still no proof, but something that we should not ignore. Again, exercising moderation will be the best bet.
